本日はJICAガーナ事務所で帰国報告会がありました。

JICAは国ごとに隊員と連絡を取り合うための事務所を設置しており、
事務所では赴任時や帰国時のオリエンテーション、担当するボランティア職種ごとの勉強会や年２回、隊員を集めた総会が行われます。

今回は帰国間際の6人の隊員がそれぞれ2年間の活動を総括。苦労したこと、そしてそれをどう乗り越えたかを聞いて、とても参考になりました。

中でも私は電気教育系隊員であり、以下分野に関係する2人の報告を聞いていて感じたことをまとめます。


１．電気教育系隊員：短期大学で電気回路の教育を担当

ガーナでは暗記ばかりの教育が横行している。
学習している中身を生徒に深く考えさせない。
また、生徒の電卓使用により計算能力が低いため、基本的な電気回路の立式ができない。
結果、授業がなかなか先に進まない。

今活動している隊員には、生徒が授業の中身を理解し、その応用が利く教え方をしてほしいとのこと。

-私の赴任先の学校はCBT導入を進めることで既存教育からの脱却を図っていますが、
生徒のモチベーション、つまり「やる気」を高めることは重要と再認識。


Today I visited JICA office to attend a briefing session by volunteers who finished their 2 year-activity and would go back Japan next Sunday.

JICA, The Japan International Cooperation Agency, has an office in each country and there are coordinators who help our volunteer work with their knowledge and careers.
At the office, orientation for first assignment and last, some study meetings, and a general meeting are held in a certain period.

In this meeting, 6 volunteers presented their 2 years activities with PowerPoint, such as their troubles and how to overcome them.
It was very impressive and useful information for me.

Among 6 volunteers, two activities are related with mine, like electrical and science education so I summarized their presentation and post my thought.

1. Electrical education at a polytechnic
In Ghana, rote memorization is very common, so students can't think deeply in subject.
Also they love using calculator and it prevents them from improving calculation abilities.
As a result, they cannot equate basic electrical terms well and it was difficult for him to fulfill his education work.
He asked us to enable them to understand knowledge and put it to practical use through our activities.

-In my school, teachers are getting out of their traditional education system and shifting to CBT.
I realized it's important to make students motivated.

２．理数科教育系隊員：教員養成校の実験部門を担当

生徒の出席をとることは生徒の学習を管理するうえで大事。

また授業効率化並びに出席を兼ねた穴埋め式のプリントを手渡しで配布。
毎回授業に参加することでシートを集めるようになった。
実験を通した授業展開は学習の理解度が増し、結果テストの点の改善が見られた。

なお、スポーツ大会等の練習で学生の授業の出席率が低下すると、テストの結果が悪くなる。
つまり授業の理解度がそれに応じて低くなる。とのこと。
学校の先生達との教育方針の違いから最初は独自で実験教育を実施していたが、次第に理解を示してくれるようになった。

帰国後、学校で教育の質が維持できるか心配とのこと。

-出席管理を兼ねた穴埋め式プリントは面白いと思いました。
スポーツ大会は仕方がない部分もありますが、生徒を授業に参加させる工夫は極めて重要と感じました。

そんな彼らの思いを継いで、残りの協力活動をより良いものにしていきたいです。


2. Science experimental education at a teacher training school
Taking attendance is important to manage their study progress.
He gave some brank handouts to his students by his hand to improve their study efficiency and note the absences.
Students got to collect handouts that the volunteer made.
Thanks for his experiment-based class helping them to understand more, the examination result became better than the past.
By the way, there was one bad result at his class because the rate of his class attendance was not good at that time due to practice for sport festival in a school.
It means that they couldn't understand the content.

At first, he started his experiment activity alone due to the difference between his educational policy and other teachers', but through his good experiment education, they understood his policy day by day.
He was worried about whether the teachers would keep the quality of the education.

His handouts are interesting because it serves both as study worksheet and as attendance check.
We volunteers cannot manage sports festival practice but it's important to keep them motivated.

I will follow those volunteer's idea and improve my volunteer activity definitely!
