My Coffee Life in Namibia — Part 2
Coffee Beans from Fellow Volunteers across Africa
When it comes to African coffee beans available from specialist coffee shops in Japan, Ethiopia and Tanzania are probably among the best-known origins. However, coffee is grown in many countries across Africa, and each has its own distinctive aromas and flavours.
Fortunately, I have received coffee beans from fellow volunteers serving in different African countries, bought locally in the countries where they are based. I have had beans from Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Uganda and Burundi, among others. Many of these are rarely available in Japan and are quite special.
As I enjoyed each cup, I imagined the places in Africa where my fellow volunteers are living and working. I savoured every one of them, and each cup has become an unforgettable memory for me.
A Café Recommended by a JICA Volunteer in Namibia ②
This time, the café I would like to recommend is SLOWTOWN. Its coffee roastery is located in the coastal town of Swakopmund, and its beans are distributed throughout Namibia.
As you can see in the photo below, SLOWTOWN offers a wide variety of coffee beans. AFRICAN is a blend of beans from Tanzania and Uganda, DEL CAMPO is a blend from Brazil and Guatemala, and the classic HOUSE BLEND combines beans from Central and South America with African beans (according to the official website, as of October 2026).
SLOWTOWN’s blends are really well thought out, bringing out the distinctive characteristics of the different beans. Both Two Beards Coffee, which I introduced in Part 1, and SLOWTOWN, featured here, are cafés — and coffee roasters — that I can confidently recommend.
Swakopmund
This is one of SLOWTOWN’s cafés in Swakopmund. It is popular with tourists and always has a lively atmosphere. There is something special about enjoying a cup of coffee while feeling the sea breeze. Personally, I also recommend their hot chocolate.
Windhoek
There are several SLOWTOWN cafés in the capital, Windhoek. Another attraction is that you can simply pop in for a coffee while shopping at one of the city’s large shopping centres.
