In early 2023, a unique opportunity arose to redefine the entrance to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital city. An open call was issued for a new sculpture to replace the iconic "Four Friends" sculpture at the Babesa Zero roundabout. This prime location, the first sight for many travelers entering the city, demanded a piece of art that would captivate and inspire.

2023年のはじめ、ブータンの首都ティンプーへの入り口を再定義するまたとない機会が訪れました。バベサ・ゼロ交差点に建てられていた象徴的な「フォー・フレンズ（象・猿・兎・鳥を描いた仏教画）」の彫刻に代わる新しい彫刻の公募が行われたのです。ティンプー市内に入る旅行者が最初に目にするこの絶好のロケーションには、人々を魅了し、刺激を与える芸術作品が求められていました。

Among the 29 entries submitted, one stood out: the design of Mr. Hiroyuki Suzuki, a JICA Volunteer teaching Fine Arts at the National Institute for Zorig Chusum in Thimphu. His innovative and thought-provoking design, inspired by Buddhist philosophy and modern art, won the competition!

応募された29の作品の中でも特に際立っていたのが、ティンプーの国立伝統工芸学院で美術を教えていた鈴木宏幸さんのデザインです。仏教哲学と現代美術に触発された、彼の革新的で思考を刺激するデザインが、コンテストで優勝しました！

Under the guidance of renowned sculptor Sir Antony Gormley, Mr. Suzuki spent over a year refining his design and the construction began in April 2024. The result was a stunning sculpture titled "Living," unveiled on October 4, 2024, by Bhutan's Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay.

著名な彫刻家、サー・アントニー・ゴームリー氏の協力の下、鈴木さんは1年以上かけてデザインを洗練させ、2024年4月に建設が開始されました。その結果、「Living（生きる）」と題された素晴らしい彫刻が完成し、2024年10月4日にブータンのツェリン・トブゲイ首相によってお披露目されました。

"Living" is more than just a sculpture; it's a gift from His Majesty the King to the people of Bhutan. The sculpture's unique form, a stack of golden bowls rising from a concrete base, symbolizes the cyclical nature of life and the concept of reincarnation. It's a powerful blend of tradition and modernity, reflecting Bhutan's rich cultural heritage while embracing contemporary artistic expression.

「Living（生きる）」は単なる彫刻ではありません。国王陛下からブータン国民への贈り物です。コンクリートの土台から立ち上がる金色のボウルの積み重ねというこの彫刻のユニークな形は、命の循環と輪廻（りんね）を象徴しています。伝統と現代性が力強く融合した作品で、ブータンの豊かな文化遺産を反映しつつ、現代的な芸術表現も取り入れています。

“My initial intention in creating this sculpture was to give form to the idea of reincarnation in Buddhist thoughts. I also sought a form that would appeal equally to all directions, as the location of the installation is a major transport hub in the Kingdom of Bhutan and the gateway to Thimphu,” shared Mr. Suzuki, further adding, “as a result, I decided on the form of this sculpture the eight shapes representing human life and their eternal change upwards while their mass remains constant.”

「この彫刻を制作した当初の意図は、仏教思想における輪廻転生の概念を形にすることでした。また、設置場所はブータン王国の主要交通拠点であり、ティンプーへの玄関口でもあるため、あらゆる方向に等しく訴える形を求めました」と鈴木さんは語り、さらに「その結果、この彫刻の形は、人間の生命と、質量は変わらぬまま上向きに永遠に変化していくことを表す８つのボウルの形に決めました」と付け加えました。

Mr. Suzuki's vision for "Living" extends beyond its aesthetic appeal. He hopes that the sculpture will inspire viewers to contemplate the deeper meaning of life and its eternal cycle. While Mr. Suzuki believes the sculpture should be perceived freely by each viewer and that the above ideas should not be forced upon the viewer, its core message of transformation and rebirth resonates with the Buddhist philosophy that permeates Bhutanese culture.

鈴木さんの「Living（生きる）」というビジョンは、美的な魅力だけにとどまりません。彼は、この彫刻が鑑賞者に、生命のより深い意味とその永遠の循環について考えるきっかけを与えることを願っています。鈴木さんは、この彫刻は鑑賞者それぞれが自由に捉えるべきものであり、上記の考えを鑑賞者に押し付けるべきではないと考えていますが、その変容と再生という核となるメッセージは、ブータン文化に浸透している仏教哲学と共鳴しています。

Mr. Suzuki first worked as a JICA Volunteer in Bhutan from 2007 -2009. His second stint as a JICA Volunteer in Bhutan from 2022 to 2024 has left an indelible mark on the country. His "Living" sculpture stands as a testament to his talent, dedication, and commitment to fostering cultural exchange and supporting the development of Bhutan. As he returns to Japan, his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift the people of Bhutan for generations to come. The Bhutanese people will forever cherish and be grateful for his contributions!

鈴木さんは、2007年から2009年にも、ブータンで海外協力隊として活動していました。2022年から2024年にかけての2度目の活動では、この国に消えることのない足跡を残しました。彼の「Living（生きた）」彫刻は、彼の才能、献身、そして文化交流を促進しブータンの発展を支援するという取り組みの証です。彼が日本に帰国した後も、彼の貢献はブータンの人々に何世代にもわたってひらめきを与え、彼らを元気づけることでしょう。ブータンの人々は彼の貢献を永遠に大切にし、感謝し続けるでしょう！
