Dear Lucian Children,

　Mathematics is used widely in the real world. Even if you don’t go to university, understanding consumer arithmetic is very important in everyday life. I want each of you to understand the concepts of VAT (Value Added Tax), discount, hire purchase so that you won’t be easily deceived.

　I think that in the future even in our country investment is going to be essential for every citizen. Therefore, I also would like you to be able to distinguish, for example, between the simple interest and the compound interest to lead to a happier life. The future is going to be completely different from the world of 2025. Do not judge your future just by the standard as of 2025. Yes, our country is sure to change in the future. And the teachers are educating the students who are going to live in future St. Lucia in the second half of the 21^st century.

　数学は実社会の様々な場面で使われています。たとえ、あなたが大学に進学しなかったとしても、消費者計算は日常生活においてとても重要です。簡単に騙されることのないように、消費税・値引き・分割払いなどの概念を理解してほしいと考えています。

　私たちの国でも、将来は、市民にとって投資が必須となることでしょう。あなたがより幸せな人生を送るために、例えば、単利と複利の違いを区別できるようになってほしいとも思っています。未来は、2025年の世界とは全く異なります。あなたの未来を、現在の社会の基準だけで判断してはいけないのです。私たちの国は、将来、必ず変わります。そして、学校の先生は、21世紀後半の未来のセントルシアを生きる子どもたちを、教育しているのです。

　If you plan to enter university, mathematics is going to be a kind of universal language to share the ideas with each other like English. I mean without mathematical ability you would not be able to succeed. Even in majors like social science, understanding the basic Data Science is quite essential. Because you need to use AI to analyze the data you collect and predict what is going to happen in the near future. Then if you want AI to bring a better result, you need to use the basic Data Science to give proper instructions to AI.

　もし、あなたが大学に進学することを考えているのなら、数学は、英語と同様、お互いの考えを共有するためのユニバーサル言語のようなものとなることでしょう。つまり、数学の学力なしで、成功を収めることはできないのです。社会科学のような専攻でさえ、データ・サイエンスの基本を理解していることがとても重要になります。なぜなら、AIを使って、集めたデータを分析し、次に何が起こるかを判断することがあるでしょう。その際に、より正確な結果を求めるならば、データ・サイエンスを使って適切な命令をAIに送る必要があるからです。

　If your major is going to be Science or Technology, calculus, trigonometry, vector and other mathematical topics will help you uncover the truth hidden in the nature. Again, do not forget that mathematics is a powerful tool for you to engage in meaningful dialogues with the teachers, the peers, the books, AI and even yourself.
