It has been a long time since I have written on the blog and I apologize for that. Just looking back last month, I had been engaging to renewal website for my assignment organization ProNet in the first 3 weeks of the month, after that I had been staying in the capital of Accra to attend the annual JICA general meeting in which more than 50 volunteers who currently work in Ghana participate and report their activities of subcommittees and so on. The main topics of this big event was a networking event with social entrepreneurs, expats from Japanese companies, and specialists invited by one of JICA volunteer.
It was a quite rare opportunity for us to know their business and activities and interact with them such as the only Japanese selected by 12 young peoples in the TED world or others who were on stage at TICAD last week!
さて、本投稿のタイトル記載のとおり『クローズアップ★ガーナ』

Let’s move on to the main topic of this article, “Accra”. Greater Accra Region, containing the capital of Accra, is the most densely populated, although the smallest region. It has become the center of politics, economy, communication and transportation since 1877. There are a lot of foreign companies and embassies, also foreign residents and tourists in the city, so it can be said Accra is the most multicultural city in Ghana. The city is well endowed with luxury as well as hotels, excellent restaurants, cafes and casinos. A range of absorbing museums and fine public monuments, and busy local market and modern business area is ready to be explored (the upper half of the second photo). However, this rapid urbanization has caused proliferation in motor vehicle use making cities increasingly congested in recent years.

Next, the laboratory of Dr. Hideo Noguchi, who well known for 1000 yen bill, is also here in Accra. Dr. Noguchi, who received worldwide renown for research on syphilis, went to Africa to research into yellow fever, and died from the disease in Accra in 1928. After his death, Japan had been continuing to cooperate to respond to a request from the Ghanaian government. In 1979, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) was established with a grant aid from the Government of Japan (the bottom right of the photo). This Institute discovered the first AIDS virus in Ghana, and research on malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis, became not only the leading biomedical research facility in Ghana but also became one of the representative institute in West Africa.
Dr. Noguchi Memorial Lab where Dr. Noguchi was actually researching is next to a large hospital called Korle Bu Hospital (the upper left of the photo). His institute is still used as training facilities for students. There is also a Japanese garden on the back of the institute that commemorates the achievements of the Doctor. He always made efforts to achieve his goals and left many famous quotes. Let me introduce one of my favorite quote;
"If I can do what I want to do hard and help others, I’ll be happy."
It should be said there are a lot of lessons we can learn from his quotes. You can find out more in the link given above if you are interested in his life.
今回はこの辺で!
